4 programme that feature Dunsley in Staithes last autumn, has made it to New
Zealand... it's also showing on Singapore Airlines inflight entertainment, so
our wee cottage by the sea has now been seen on the other side of the world, as well as
on the way to it. Funny to think that Captain James Cook left Staithes for
Whitby and then New Zealand, and technology is finally catching up!
Christmas Illuminations are up at Dunsley in Staithes... it's not entirely traditional since the tree is in the bedroom and the fish is eating tinsel, but it's the festive thought that counts. Hoping our guests have fun! best wishes to all for 2016, from Judy, Duncan and Dunsley
Well, we thought the glorious North Yorkshire coast looked fabulous on Homes by the Sea last night (Tues Oct 6: second series, second episode). Staithes featured for 11 minutes, with Dunsley, our little self-catering holiday cottage, for nearly 4 minutes. Harbour, beach, fossils, ginnels and the river, great drone shots and some wonderful views: just brilliant. It screens again on Sunday at 7pm on Channel 4... what fun!
OK, so the new series of Homes by the Sea has started: the first episode on Cornwall was fantastic. The North Yorkshire episode with Dunsley's 'short and sweet' segment (according to the film makers!) is on TV tomorrow night: More 4 at 9pm; and again on Sunday night (Oct 11) on Channel 4 at 7pm. Prime time viewing! I'm definitely nervous about how Duncan and I will look on TV (it was just after my knee operation) but I guess we'll find out tomorrow!
Exciting news: Dunsley in Staithes is being featured in
Channel 4's new series of Homes by the Sea. It's presented by Charlie Lockton,
who was really friendly and easy to work with when they did the filming in May.
It was a tight squeeze getting me (on crutches), Duncan, Charlie and the whole
film crew up our twisty staircase and into the snug on the top floor, but
hopefully worth the effort. We're part of the North Yorkshire episode, which is
episode 2, showing on More 4, Tuesday October 6th at 9pm. Can't wait!
We are so grateful to our wonderful guests who post reviews, and especially when they are so complimentary. Thanks, everyone! Here's the link: I'll try to put the same info on this blog but in reality the Facebook page might get updated more often, especially with pictures and day-to-day stuff. We'll see how it goes, I'd love to hear what you think...
Exploring the village on steep-step footpaths, views over the sea from Cowbar Nab, surf splashing over the harbour walls... Staithes is always a treat in summer. This week has been especially good with lots of visitors, lots of sunshine and a lovely atmosphere. What a fabulous weekend in sunny Staithes: blue sky, big seas, and a lovely buzz from enthusiastic visitors. We were working on the platform again: Duncan, Steve and John (visiting from New Zealand) building steps from the parking to the lower platform. It's a real sun trap, and is starting to shape up as a top spot for evening drinks for guests at Dunsley holiday cottage...
Great news: Stage 2 is well underway on the parking platform for our holiday cottage Dunsley in Staithes. Mike and Matt have spent the last week building the foundations for the decking, which almost covers the lower platform. Today we measured up for the shed - planning permission was granted in October 2013 so it's about time we cracked on with it. Mike is a master joiner so it will be a thing of beauty. The plan is to make a space where we, and our guests, can have evening picnics, barbecues or just a sun-downer drink: the area gets lovely evening light. The flax bushes, planted in autumn, are thriving, and so is the tussock planted directly below the parking platform. We hope to plant fuchsia next; any suggestions of maintenance-free plants that will cope with a maritime climate? Our private parking platform has been particularly welcome this year, as the council-run Bank Top car park has been halved in size, with the top section now an even more expensive private park. So our guests are saving even more, by staying at Dunsley!
This year's fabulous fortnight of the Ryedale Festival is July 17 to August 2. Inspiring performances in the many beautiful and historic venues of Ryedale and North Yorkshire have chamber music at the heart. Highlights include a 100th anniversary programme of Rachmaninov's All Night Vigil in Ampleforth Abbey, National Youth Jazz Orchestra in Malton and the series of Coffee Concerts. Classic venues include Castle Howard, Sledmere House and Church, Duncombe Park and Hovingham Hall. This latter hosts, among other treats, the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra and the Final Gala Concert.
Dunsley Cottage in Staithes is a wonderful base for discovering the festival gems. We still have availability for a Monday to Friday break, July 27-31.
Just a note about the wonderful charity Family Holiday Association and their 40th anniversary. Since 1975 they have been spreading a little sunshine into the lives of thousands of struggling families who face issues including illness, disability, bereavement and abuse, by offering them simple breaks to the British seaside. For their 40th anniversary, they are organising Seaside Walk Week, with guided walks along and near the great British coast. The nearest venue to Staithes is a walk at Whitby on Saturday 30th May. For details on how to participate,to find other venues or even organise your own walk, go to www.seasidewalkweek.org.uk

All through winter, guests at Dunsley Cottage and visitors to Staithes have been in for a surprise: an extra bench on the promenade above the beach, forming part of an exquisite artwork. Relative Treats, a steel sculpture by Durham-based artist Ray Londsale, is a life-sized model of a grandmother and her grand-daughter. Portraying the link between generations, it shows the woman offering her open handbag to the child, who searches for sweets for herself, and a painkiller for her Gran.
The detail is breathtaking: the lines on one face and youth on the other; the warm hat clamped onto one head and the bouncy ponytail of the child; the creases on clothing and angle of strained coat buttons, and especially the body language between the two.
Relative Treats is on display, courtesy of Scarborough Borough Council and Ray Londsale, until April 19th. It is an absolute delight: don't miss it!
On the advice of friends in Staithes, we've just paid a visit to The Fox Inn, in Roxby. We were staying at Dunsley, our romantic holiday cottage in Staithes, for Duncan's birthday. It's about 7 minutes drive inland from the coast, through Dalehouse and right up onto the moor top. A small, very traditional country pub in a tiny village, it was taken on just over a year ago by Carl and Alison: Carl works the bar and front of house, while Alison conjures up fab food in the background. The restaurant is quite small, with a wood burning stove; ditto the bar. Emphasis is more on service, food and atmosphere, than decor. There's a strong local customer base - I had to duck beneath a gent playing darts, to reach the toilets! There was one real ale when we visited (January 30th), an excellent Black Sheep. The food is wonderful: well priced, beautifully cooked and presented, and interesting. We had tiger prawns in a Thai dressing - fat prawns, well cooked, perfectly seasoned - and fish-3-ways as starters; then one of the day's specials, pork fillet in Stilton sauce, and chicken stuffed with cream cheese and garlic in a roast pepper and tomato sauce. Veg were spot-on and we had home-made chips and new potatoes. Duncan managed a dessert - a really superb, light, apple strudel with ice cream. Add a bottle of wine, 2 beers, and the bill was just £55. Bargain! We will definitely be back! Thanks, Carl and Ali, for a lovely evening for Duncan's birthday.
A guest at Dunsley holiday cottage asked me recently if there was anywhere in Staithes that served breakfast: it would save shopping for supplies on their first morning of a three-day weekend break. I offered the two cafes - Seadrift on the harbour and The Tea Shop on Bank Top, both opening at 10am, but it was more like coffee and cakes, than real breakfast. Then, a couple of weeks ago, fantastic news! The Endeavour Restaurant was taken over by Vicky from the fabulous Whitby Seafish smokehouse (behind the council car park on Bank Top), renamed The Endeavour Kitchen, and now open for breakfast! Hurray! Full English, bacon butties, kippers and more (including lunches, afternoon tea, supper) are now available from 8am to 8pm Wednesday to Saturday. On Sunday, it's breakfast 8am-12 noon, then Sunday lunch - roast beef with all the trimmings - until 4pm. We peeped in the window today and saw lots of happy people enjoying lunch; we can't wait to go ourselves: first visit will definitely be breakfast. More at www.endeavourkitchen.com; it's on the High Street opposite the Royal George, about 30 seconds walk from Dunsley.
Old Jack’s Boat, the popular children’s show on CBeebie’s
digital TV channel, has been
filming again in Staithes. Last week (September 2014) the crew were shooting on the steps from Roxby Beck and in Chapel Yard,
outside Dunsley Cottage. “It was a 1930s scene, so we propped fishing nets
against any visible modern things like electric junction boxes,” they
explained.

Old Jack’s
Boat, first aired in 2013, has enjoyed one full series and some Special
episodes. The current filming is for a Special to be aired in March 2015, and
there is a good chance Dunsley will feature, even if only in the background...

The TV show
features Bernard Cribbins as Old Jack, a retired fisherman who lives in a
little village on the North Yorkshire Coast. Helped along by a cast of
colourful characters, Old Jack tells tall stories from inside his old fishing
boat ‘Rainbow’. The series is a mix of live action and animation which allows
Old Jack to wander along the seabed, visit tropical islands and fly high in the
air on balloons always accompanied by his faithful dog, Salty (a Hungarian
Vizsla, whose real name is Scuzz).

Bernard Cribben
said: “I’ve filmed in a lot of locations throughout my career, but there’s
something about the sea air, the beauty and the friendliness in Staithes that
makes it a special place to be.”

The producers
added: “Staithes is a wonderful backdrop to the series and we have retained its
name as we wanted the programme to feel rooted in a real place. Every story
that Old Jack tells begins with the words , “Once upon a twinkly time The
Rainbow set off from Staithes, waved goodbye to Whitby and headed off over the
horizon…”

From its position on the edge of the North York Moors national park, Staithes and Dunsley (www.dunsleyinstaithes.co.uk) are perfectly placed for easy access onto the moors. The heather display is always worth seeing: our moors are the largest expanse of heather moorland in the United Kingdom. This year, it is particularly good, due to lots of warm weather that has created an incredible growing season on all levels. This photo was taken this week from Blakey Ridge, of the view into Farndale. It's a 20 minute drive from Dunsley, and there are some really good walks from here. Options include easy strolls along the disused railway line around the heads of Rosedale and Farndale (with refreshments at the Lions Inn on Blakey Ridge, the highest pub in England), or more strenuous hikes into and across the valleys. My book - North York Moors, Freedom to Roam - outlines several in this area; there is a copy in Dunsley's bookshelf.
The heather will last well into September this year, so there's still a chance to enjoy the purple glory!
We saw some extraordinary tides at Staithes on Tuesday this week: a low tide of 0.25m (compared with the usual neap of around 2.2m), and a high of 6.11m (compared with 4.35m). It was the combination of Spring tides on a full moon, when the moon was exceptionally close to the earth, with high pressure. It was really quite incredible: at low tide at midday the sea actually retreated out of the harbour, and the rock platform that makes up the surf break to the south was completely exposed. There were people walking all over it, where normally there are fish and seals. To the right, under Cowbar Nab, people were walking in 'the tangles', as the kelp beds are known.
We were working on the parking platform, making it tidy and getting rid of weeds, and took time out to watch the action. These pictures were taken from the footpath that runs from the parking down to the harbour, at about 12.15pm. The first is across the harbour with the boats high and dry, and the second is the view toward Cowbar, showing the tide at the harbour entrance, instead of inside it!
The private parking platform for guests at Dunsley cottage in Staithes (www.dunsleyinstaithes.co.uk) is now complete. We are delighted to be able to offer the closest possible parking to the harbour village, on a smart new plinth by the Captain Cook lookout. Our local contractors have done a fantastic job building the 2-place platform, and another lower platform which will, hopefully by the end of summer, be home to a wooden shed. Duncan has made the steel barriers (NASA-worthy, like the cottage gate).
Next job is to landscape - we plan to plant wildflower meadow seed, and buy montbretia and flax from Poet's Cottage shrub nursery in nearby Lealholm. By the time we've finished, Dunsley guests will have access to a garden with a view over the river and cliffs to the sea, enjoyed in evening and morning sunshine from strategically placed benches. Ah, the plans! In the meantime, the private parking is now available... it's a real rarity in Staithes, and saves our guests £35 per week public car park charges, plus it's a shorter distance to walk from the cottage. Enjoy!

Parking in Staithes is at a premium. Very few cottages have access to beach-level parking, and the vast majority of guests pay to park at the 'top of the bank', at a cost of £35 per week. Last year, we bought a patch of land by the village lookout, on the lip of the bank, to create a private parking platform for guests at Dunsley holiday cottage (www.dunsleyinstaithes.co.uk). For months we have been jumping through planning permission hoops with the North York Moors national park and the Highways Authority. Imagine our relief when we finally acquired all necessary permits for the parking and garden shed, which our guests can use to store bikes, surfboards or other items that need security. Work started this week and we hope it will be finished within 10 days. Here are pictures of our wonderful contractor, Nobles of Whitby, hard at work... we will update all our guests with details of how to access the parking, as soon as we have the barriers installed and a padlock code. Parking with a view: at last!
Great news for egg lovers: they are not just for Easter. While chocolate and fancy designs rule the roost this month, guests at Dunsley holiday cottage (www.dunsleyinstaithes.co.uk) can enjoy the real thing. Our neighbour Sonia, at Fossil Cottage, now has a brood of six happy hens in her allotment (near the car park). These free-range lovelies are also terrific egg producers, so Sonia regularly fills the egg box in Fossil Cottage's front yard. It's an honesty system, and the eggs are gorgeous! It's the ultimate breakfast treat: wander down to the butcher for fresh bread from Danby's Stonehouse bakery (meat lovers will also appreciate the excellent Staithes bacon and sausages), and an egg or two from Sonia's supply. Then enjoy the meal in Dunsley's private front yard or, if it's too cool, in the cottage with the stable door top open so you can take in the outside, from the inside. Heaven - and not a chocolate in sight.
Hot news: Drama at Dunsley! Our early February guests at Dunsley holiday cottage in Staithes (www.dunsleyinstaithes.co.uk) report that a TV crew was filming on the footpath, directly outside Dunsley's gate. Hilary took this picture from Dunsley's bedroom window. But what were they shooting? She says: "It was definitely drama not documentary - after about 8 takes we knew the
script - also definitely not Old Jack's Boat!"
If anyone can shed any light on this, we'd love to hear from you! Please email us: dunsley.staithes@gmail.com . Meanwhile I have my feelers out and will update this if I learn anything new.
